Abstract
The collar is secured to the shaft of a drill bit, so that a cutting edge or teeth on the lower section may take the form of a countersink cutter concentric with the drill bit, allowing the cutting of a countersink hole in the same operation as drilling the main hole. The securement is by a radial screw, or an adjustable strap as shown. Alternatively the collar has a spring clamp effect to grip around drills of different diameter shanks. <IMAGE>
Description
THE COUNTERSINK COLLAR
This invention relates to a tool which will produce a countersink or larger clearance hole in the same operation as drilling a main hole.
Ordinary twist drills allow rapid drilling of wood and other materials.
However, if the hole is to take a fixing such as a countersunk woodscrew or a bolt without the head protruding, an appropriately sized and shaped countersink bit must be used in a separate operation to cut the recess for the head.
According to the present invention, there is provided an attachment designed to clamp or otherwise attach to the shaft of the drill bit which will cut the countersink section in the same operation as drilling the main hole.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 shows a countersink collar, with a central hole for the shaft of an appropriate drill bit, and an arrangement of teeth on its lower or leading surface, here disposed at an angle suitable for providing countersink holes for woodscrews.
Figure 2 shows the disposition of a countersink collar on a conventional twist drill, and the means of securing it by a grub-screw.
To use, the countersink collar is attached to a suitably sized drill bit at the appropriate distance from the cutting tip for the job in hand, and drilling proceeds in the normal way, until the teeth in the leading edge of the collar produce a counters hole of the appropriate depth.
The drill bit is then withdrawn to go on to the next hole.
Figure 3 shows an alternative form of countersink collar with an external clamp, suitable for larger drill bits.
Figure 4 shows an alternative form of countersink collar which uses a spring clamp effect, so that it has a self-clamping function on a range of drill bit sizes.
Figure 5 shows an alternative form of countersink collar suitable for softer materials
Claims (5)
1. A collar of any material which may be attached to a drill bit, so that it may act as a countersink bit concentric with that primary drill bit.
2. A collar as claimed in Claim 1 which by means of an external clamp..
clamping screw or other method, may be fastened to the shaft of a drill bit.
3. A collar as claimed in Claim 1 which by virtue of its construction and or its composition has a self-clamping action on the shaft of a drill bit of the appropriate size or range of drill bits of appropriate sizes.
4. A collar as claimed in claim 1 which may be held in place by the action of an external holder, such as the chuck of the drill or brace which holds the shaft of the primary drill bit.
5. A collar as claimed in claim 1 which uses an abrasive material to act as a cutting edge.
