Abstract
The jaws 2 of a chuck 1 each carry longitudinally extending splines 4 on the outer tapered surface so that the jaws 2, preferably when closed together, can be used to countersink a pre-drilled hole, so eliminating the need for a separate countersink bit. The splines 4 may be replaced by an abrasive outer surface of the jaws. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in and relating to chucks
Technical Field of the Invention
The invention relates to improvements in and relating to chucks.
Background Art
Chucks of a tool which can be used for drilling such as a manual or electrical drill, or a lathe, usually have a plurality of jaws which can be moved towards and away from each other in the longitudinal direction of the chuck in order to hold a variety of drills for drilling holes of various sizes.
It is often required that a hole drilled has to be countersunk, and this can only be achieved by laboriously removing the drill using and inserting a counter countersunk bit.
Disclosure of the Invention
It is an object of the invention to seek to mitigate this disadvantage of the prior art.
According to the invention there is provided a chuck of a tool which can be used for drilling, comprising a plurality of jaws one of which at least has on its outer surface means for providing a countersink in a bore.
Using the invention it is possible to provide a chuck which itself acts as a countersink and so the need for a separate countersink bit can be eliminated.
The means may comprise a plurality of splines extending in the longitudinal direction of the jaw.
There may be three jaws; this provides for a relatively simple construction of chuck.
The means may comprise an abrasive outer surface of the jaw.
There may be three jaws each of which may have an abrasive outer surface comprising said means.
Each jaw may have on its outer surface a plurality of splines extending in the longitudinal direction of the jaw. This construction provides for a symmetrical countersink.
The invention, it will be understood, extends to a tool including a chuck as hereinbefore defined.
Embodiments of the invention are hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Brief Description of the Drawings
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of chuck embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of a jaw of the chuck; and
Fig. 3 is an end elevational view of the jaw of
Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged view on arrows 'A' of parts of Figs. 2 and 3; and Fig. 5 is a side elevational view of a jaw of a second embodiment of chuck.
Referring to the drawings there is shown a chuck 1 of a tool (not shown) which can be used for drilling, comprising three identical jaws 2 which are disposed in a frusto-conical arrangement and are mutually movable towards and away from each other along the longitudinal axis 3 of the chuck 1 to mount a drill also (not shown) in a seating defined by the jaws 2 along the longitudinal axis 3. Each jaw 2 has means for providing a countersink in the form of longitudinally extending splines 4 on its outer, frusto-conical, surface. The splines 4 are angled or undercut to provide teeth so that when the jaws 2, suitably closed together, are inserted in a bore or hole already provided in a workpiece and the drilling tool is activated to rotate the jaws, the chuck and jaws rotate about the longitudinal axis and countersink the bore or hole to the required depth.The jaws 2 then obviate the need for a separate countersink bit.
It will be understood that the kind, size, and depth of the splines 4 can be varied to the particular requirements of a job. Also, the outer surfaces may not be tapered as shown. In this case the countersink will be cylindrical. In any embodiment the end face 5 of each jaw 2 may have roughening or splines 6 to ensure a rapid drilling of a countersink hole.
Also, the splines 4 may be replaced by an abrasive outer surface 4' of the jaws to provide the means for providing a countersink (Fig. 5).
1. A chuck of a tool which can be used for drilling, comprising a plurality of jaws one of which at least has on its outer surface means for providing a countersink in a bore.
2. A chuck according to Claim 1 , the means comprising a plurality of splines extending in the longitudinal direction of the jaw.
3. A chuck according to Claim 2, in which there are three jaws.
4. A chuck according to Claim 3, in which each jaw has on its outer surface a plurality of splines extending in the longitudinal direction of the jaw.
5. A chuck according to any preceding claim, the jaws provide a frusto-conical shape.
6. A chuck according to Claim 1 , the means comprising an abrasive outer surface of the jaw.
7. A chuck according to Claim 6, in which there are three jaws each of which has an abrasive outer surface comprising said means.
8. A chuck of a tool which can be used for drilling, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
9. A tool which can be used for drilling, including a chuck as claimed in any of the preceding claims.
