Abstract
560,507. Drilling. BRIGGS, J. C., CHESTON, A. S., CHESTON, B., and EDMONDS, E. C. Jan. 14, 1943, No. 732. [Class 83 (iii)] Drill &c. chucks which may be of the kind described in Specification 545,699 are fitted with a relatively rotatable sleeve acting as a depth stop and containing a ball race interposed between the sleeve and chuck. The split collet 6, Fig. 1, is formed to fit the flutes of the drill enabling broken drills to be used and is closed by a screw cap 4 between the end of which and a race 13 formed in the sleeve 9 a ball bearing 14 is disposed. The sleeve is rotatably held in position on the cap 4 by means such as a spring ring 10 or a grub screw and groove. The sleeve is formed with spaced legs 15 to permit escape of cuttings. The race 13 may be formed in a separate member spaced from the sleeve by a spring washer to reduce shock when the legs 15 contact with the work. In a further modification the ball bearing has an upper race member 20 separate from the cap 4 and pressed downwards by a spring 21 having as upper abutment a flanged screwed ring 22 adjustable on a screwed sleeve 23 itself adjustable on the cap 4. The spring 21 affords the shock-reducing resilience and contact of the parts 23, 24 adjustably limits the depth of penetration. The race member 20 is prevented from rotating on the cap by a screw 26 and slot 25.
