[Class 83 (iii)] A centring device for drilling and other machine tools comprises a shank 1 for securing to a rotating tool-holder and a centring member consisting solely of a finger-like stem 5 universally connected at one end directly to the shank and having a sharp point 6 at the other end so that, by first rotating the tool-holder and steadying the stem into a position where it ceases to gyrate and then lowering the tool-holder until the point of the stem is close to the work, a centre marking on the work-piece can be brought directly under the tool-holder by adjustment of the work-table. The case-hardened and knurled shank 1 has a hemi-spherical or bevelled seating 2 for a ball 3 on the stem 5 and a spring 9, whose pressure is adjustable by a screwed plug 12, presses on a pad 7 bearing on the ball-end through a hemi-spherical or bevelled seating 8 and controls the freedom of movement of the stem 5. The device may be used in a milling machine to set up a work-piece so that a slot can be cut along a marked line or in a lathe to check the setting of the tail stock centre relative to the head stock centre by mounting the device in the head stock.
