[Also in Group VI] In a drill handpiece the tool shaft is held in an automatic chuck and the end of the driving shaft, in which the chuck is located, is centred by the tool shaft. A tubular holder 1 encloses the final driving shaft 2, the inner end of which is supported in a ball bearing 3 and which is driven by a flexible drive engaging a coupling 12. At its other end the shaft 1 has a tubular bore 13a to accommodate the chuck 18. This is of the type in which the tool stem 7 is a sliding fit in a cage 15 carrying three or more rollers 19 set between the tool stem and cam surfaces on the inside face of the bore 13a so that, immediately the drive is applied, the rollers are wedged between the cam surfaces and the tool and provide a positive drive. The tool passes through a bearing bush 8 in the end of the holder and thus serves to locate this end of the drive shaft 2. The surfaces of the rollers may be roughened or grooved and a ball-bearing may be substituted for the plain bearing 8. A packing ring and/or thrower may be provided adjacent the bottom bearing to prevent the ingress of dust &c.
