Abstract

289,486. Lacey E. G. April 29, 1927, [Convention date]. Boring and drilling; sockets.-A machine for boring or drilling wood or metal is provided with a sleeve 19 for guiding the drill adjacent the work, the guide-sleeve being driven at the same speed as the drill to avoid relative rotation therebetween. The drill 14 is secured in the split end of the spindle 12 as by a set-screw 15, the split end of the spindle being adjustable within narrow limits to accommodate drill shanks of different size, by a screw 18. The drill spindle is splined at 21 within a sleeve 7 provided with a driving-pulley 31 and with collars 10 for preventing axial movement of the sleeve. The guide-sleeve 19 may be screwed into the sleeve 10 or may be tapered to fit a corresponding taper therein. The drill may be fed by a hand-actuated sliding bar 27 clamped to a thrust-bearing 26 engaged by lugs on the keys 22. The work carried by a table 32 may be adjusted in proximity to the guide-sleeve 19, or, in a modification, the guide-sleeve may be adjusted relatively to a fixed work table. A slot 7@ is provided in the driving sleeve 7 for the escape of cuttings &c.
