Abstract
692,836. Boring-heads. ENGLISH STEEL CORPORATION, Ltd., and LEVESLEY, E. Feb. 25, 1952 [May 30, 1951], No. 12796/51. Class 83 (iii). A boring-head adapted to be fed during the boring operation as the work - piece is rotated comprises cutting-tools 1 mounted on a bar 4 which is guided in the bore of the work-piece by pads 18 disposed in annular formation on the bar and mounted to rotate with the workpiece so that relative rotation between the work-piece and pads is substantially eliminated. The bar 4 is secured by an adaptor 5 to the threaded-end 3 of a hub 2 in which the tools 1, preferably of cemented carbide, are adjustable in a radial slot 6 by screws 7, 7a. End-thrust from the tools is transmitted to the adaptor 5 through bearings 10 on the hub, a ring 15 in threaded engagement with the base of a sleeve 14, and a collar 11 threaded on to the end of the hub. The pads 18 may be formed from wood, metal, plastic, &c., and are secured in slots in the sleeve 14 which runs on bearings 17 on the hub. Packing may be interposed between the pads and the sleeve to adjust the diameter of the outer surface of the pads which may be turned to the correct curvature. Passages 8, 9 in the hub convey coolant from the hollow bar 4 to the tools 1 to remove swarf which is prevented from fouling the bearings by packing-rings 13, 17a.
