Abstract
512,076. Steady rests. GEMMELL, A. J. April 12, 1938, No. 11261. [Class 83 (iii)] In a lathe of the kind on which the stock bar is fed axially while it is turned by stationary tools, the bar is guided near the point of operation in a split bush 1 having a tapered portion 3 with its large end towards the point of operation so that the bush is drawn away from said point to contract the bore. The tapered part of the bush lies in a tapered recess in a sleeve 5 mounted in ball bearings 6, 7 adjusted by screw collars 12, 13 on the sleeve. The outer races are screwed into a stationary carrier 8. The sleeve may carry a driving plate 51 having pins 16 sliding in holes in a part carried by the chuck which drives the work. The bush is internally threaded at the rear part and is moved axially by a screwed member 18 rotated by its flanged end 19. If the guide bush is not required to rotate, the plate 15 and pins are omitted and the sleeve 5 secured in the carrier 8.
