Abstract
558,430. Lathe steady-rests. EVANS, W. J. June 8, 1943, No. 7759/42. [Class 83 (iii)] A steady rest for a lathe or like machine comprises three work-engaging rollers 23 carried by members operated by three interconnected lead screws 26, 30, 31 so that the rollers are moved simultaneously to and from the work. The screws 26 are connected by bevel gears 34, 35 and they may be rotated either by a knob 27 on the screw 26 or by a knob 32 on the screw 31. The arm 20 carrying the lower steady may be moved independently by first disengaging the bevel gears 35. In some cases the bevel gears may be replaced by ball joints. In another modification the guide for the arm 20 may be inclined as shown at 26<SP>1</SP> and the roller located at a position 23<SP>1</SP> where it resists the thrust of the tool. In a further modification the rollers of the arms 21, 22 may be arranged vertically one above the other. Any or all of the arms may be pivoted so that their rollers may be moved to inoperative positions.
