[Class 83 (iii)] An attachment for a lathe comprises a bracket 19 attached directly to the saddle 12 and fitted with a ball or roller-bearing bush or collet mounted coaxially with the lathe spindle to steady the work-bar 16 adjacent to tools mounted on the normal cross slide. The saddle may be adjusted step by step along the bed to make a succession of parts until the chuck 15 is reached. The bracket enters a gap between the guides 11 and is secured by studs or bolts 21. The tailstock spindle may carry an end working tool 18 and the tailstock may be adjustably coupled to the saddle by a link 39 so that it moves along the bed with the saddle. In some cases a cam moving with the tailstock spindle may coact with rollers on the cross slide to operate the same. When a collet 37 is used it may be mounted in a sleeve 28, Fig. 2, in which it is adjustable by nuts 38. The sleeve may be carried in double-taper roller-bearings which may be preloaded by nuts 30, dirt being excluded by plates 33. In a modification the bearing assembly and collet may be fitted as a unit into the bracket. In another modification, Fig. 3, the sleeve is omitted and the inner race 42 of the bearings 43 is shaped to receive the collet. A thrust race is incorporated at 47.
