Abstract

523,743. Milling-machines. WADKIN, Ltd., and RADCLIFFE, S. Jan. 13, 1939, No. 1220. [Class 145 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] A templet-controlled copy-milling machine for milling parts of wood or of metal such asaluminium, particularly for aircraft has the shank 18 of the cutter 19 detachably secured to a chuck 14 on the milling head and a non- rotatable templet follower which is supported immediately below the chuck and is bored to receive the cutter shank. The cutter may have a speed of about 24,000 r.p.m. and is driven from a motor 10 adjustable on guides 11 at the end of a supporting arm movable freely in a horizontal plane. The chuck may be operated by a spanner applied to the hexagon 15. The follower may have an extension 20 secured to the motor casing 21 and for finishing a pile of work pieces 22 to the same dimensions as the templet 23 the diameter of the follower may be the same as that of the cutter 19. For roughing out the cutter may be of smaller diameter than the follower. A pedestal 26 is fitted with a hollow spindle 27 which carries at its head a rotatable ball bearing sleeve 28 which on one side carries a part of a casing 29 which accommodates the slide arm 30. This arm is fitted with track members 31 which engage adjustable grooved rollers 32 mounted in the casing. A handle 33 is provided for moving the cutter and follower round the work. The leads 34 from the motor may be. passed through hollow jointed arms 38, 37 and through the spindle 27 to a frequency converter located within the pedestal 26.
