Abstract

770,274. Lathe details. CALOW, T., [trading as CALOW & CO., T.]. May 13, 1953, No. 13419/53. Class 83 (3). A revolving cutter head comprises three or more tools which have a lip angle of about 90 degrees and are adjustable to give a front rake angle of - 5 to -10 degrees. Four tools are arranged on a head, the cutting tips 3, Fig. 3, being secured by wedges 4 and adjusted by screws or wedges (not shown), in holders 1 which are adjustable on guides 18, Fig. 8. Each holder is adjusted for feed by rack-and-pinion 26, 27 turned by hand or by an electric motor on the head. The feed is limited by nuts 20 and movement of each holder is damped by an hydraulic piston 23. Alternatively, each holder may be damped by magnets mounted in the guide 18, the magnets also serving to prevent displacement of the holder away from its guide- Way. In a modification, the holders are in contact with a cam disc 39, Fig. 11, so that if undue resistance is encountered the disc is moved against the force of springs 42 and damping-means 43. Alternatively, the disc 39 may be adjustable under the control of the operator. In a final modification, the cutters 3, Fig. 12, are mounted in a head 1 which carries deflector-plates 46 to divert cuttings outwardly against fixed chip-breakers 48. Gauging-devices for feeling the diameter of the work, and automatically adjusting the diameter turned, may be provided,
