Abstract

474,393. Lathe cutter-heads. CALOW, T. April 30, 1936, No. 12315. [Classes 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] A lathe cutter-head has steady rests arranged in the plane of the tool and other steady rests arranged behind said plane, the two sets of rests being independently adjustable. In one form, Figs. 1 and 2, the rests in the plane of the tool e consist of steadying pads c radially adjustable by bolts d. Behind the pads c are arranged steady rollers i in radiallyadjustable slides k. The rollers i may be adjusted to a smaller diameter than the pads so that they polish the work. The cutter head may be balanced by weight located at the parts z. The tool slot in the slide f and the slot y which conducts chips from the head may be reinforced with hard wear-resisting metal. In a modification, the two steadies opposite the tool may be of roller form while the third located close to the tool may be a steadying pad such as c. In another modification, Fig. 4, the cutterhead a with the steadies c is located within a housing l in which front adjustable steadying- pads h, may also be provided. The rollers i which may act as polishing rollers are adjustable in slides k behind the cutter portion a. In another modification, the housing for the polishing steadies i is connected by a tubular member carried in a bearing to the housing containing the cutter portion a and the centring steadies h.
