470,658. Grinding screw-threads &c. BROWN & SONS (HUDDERSFIELD), Ltd., D., and MERRITT, H. E. April 14, 1936, No. 10641. [Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] In a machine for cutting or grinding the threads of worms, screws or the like, the work d is mounted between centres on a slidable table b and the work spindle a is axially aligned with a master screw f running in a nut g carried by a head h, the table and head being connected by a lever i pivoting on a fixed centre c<1> so that the axial movement of the table b produced by rotation of the work spindle may be varied to cut threads of different lead from the same master screw. Instead of rotating the work spindle, the table may for long lead screws be moved axially and relative longitudinal movement of the work and head will then cause rotation of the work spindle. The pivotal connection k of the lever to the head may be on either side of the pivot c<1>. Indexing of the work for multiple-start threads may be effected by rotating the nut in the head during a non- operative part of the cycle.
