Abstract

484,672. Milling lathes. HASSE & WREDE GES., C., and PETER, P. Nov. 6, 1936, No. 30256. [Class 83 (iii)] In a spindle journalling arrangement for lathes adapted to perform turning and threadmilling operations in a single set-up, two different bearing fits are provided which may be put into operation selectively, one fit being tight to the degree required for thread-milling and the other being sufficiently slack for turning at a high speed. Two sets of turnings 6, 7, Fig. 1, may be used, one set 7 of which is tightened automatically for the thread-milling operation by moving the hand-lever 12 for shifting the dog clutch 5 in engaging the slow speed worm drive 4. The bearings are tightened by screwing down the bearing caps 9, Fig. 4. In a modification one set of bearings only is used and these are slackened or tightened, respectively, according to whether the spindle is being used for a turning or a thread-milling operation. In a further modification two bearings are provided for turning operations which are non-adjustable and a third bearing is provided at the front end of the spindle which is tightened for thread-milling operations.
