Abstract
571,769. Milling-machines. VICKERS-ARMSTRONGS, Ltd., and PERRY, C. Nov. 23, 1943, No. 19576. [Class 83 (iii)] In a milling-machine for producing cams copied from a master cam, the pattern 12 and blank 3 are mounted concentrically on a spindle 14 which is rotated during cutting by gearing 43, a follower 28 and a cutter 29 being mounted on parallel spindles 26, 27 carried by a frame 25 pivotally mounted on a fixed shaft 19 so that the weight of the frame will cause the cutter to operate on the blank until the follower engages the pattern. The frame 25 is fed along the axis of the blank by a feed screw 36 rotatably mounted beneath the shaft 19 in the bearings 15, 18 which support the spindle 14 and driven either by a handle 39 or by gearing 40 connected to the gearing 43. The cutter spindle 27 may be driven by a flexible drive or by gearing 35 from an electric motor 32 mounted on the frame 25 and a second motor drives through a worm reduction gear, the spindle 14 and feed screw 36 at one of two speeds depending on whether the gear 43 or the pinion 44 is driven thereby. The feed screw engages a nut 37 slidable along the shaft 19 and located between lugs 21, 22 on the frame 25, bushes 23 in the lugs sliding along the shaft 19. The cutter and follower may be adjustable axially along the spindles 26, 27 to suit variations in the cam profiles and the follower may consist of a solid of revolution or a part thereof instead of a roller. The spindle 14 may carry several cam blanks, each operated upon by a cutter parallel to the cutter 29 and the axes of the follower and cutter spindles may be inclined to the axis of spindle 14 at angles other than a right angle. Gauging- means may be provided to compare a finished or partly-finished blank with the pattern and for this purpose an adjustable pin may be mounted in a bush 47 to engage the pattern and thereby support the frame whilst a dial gauge is mounted in a bush 48 in the frame so that its stem may engage the blank to indicate deviations thereof from the pattern as the blank and pattern are rotated and the frame fed axially, the cutter and follower spindles having been removed from the machine. Instead of pivoting the frame on the shaft 19 it may have a depending flange slidable and rockable along a groove in the base-plate 11.
