[Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] In a screw-cutting machine the work W is mounted between a headstock spindle A and a tailstock spindle C, both of which are carried by a table G, the former carrying a lead-screw engaging a nut A<1> whilst the latter is pressed towards the work by a spring F and a hand lever E. The table G is slidable transversely to the spindle axis by means of a slide H working in stationary guides J which also support a stationary milling cutter or grinding disc J<2>. In operation, the work is moved up to the cutter by a hand lever (not shown), operating on the slide H, an adjustable stop on the slide determining the depth of cut, and on rotating the spindle A by a pulley or handle A<2> the work is rotated and traversed past the cutter, the spindle C being pushed back against its spring. The spindle A and nut A<1> are interchangeable to suit different pitches of thread.
