572,485. Grinding and polishing. HOBSON (AIRCRAFT & MOTOR) COMPONENTS, Ltd., H. M., and MADDOX, S. V. Jan. 1, 1944, No. 14. [Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] An attachment to a milling or grinding machine having a worktable traversable past a stationary cutter, to enable it to form shaped lands in cylindrical work-pieces such as the scroll valves described in Specification 577,910, [Group XXIX], comprises a base 13 to be attached to the table 10 and provided with a work-holding chuck 14 and a back centre 16 for supporting the work 15. A lever 22 is pivoted at 23 to a bracket 24 on the base 13, has one end 25 held stationary by a roller thereon engaging a straight transverse slot in the machine bed 11, and carries at the other end a block 20 connected to a shoe 19 slidable in guides 18 on the base 13 in a direction parallel to the motion of the table 10. A removable cam 32 on the shoe 19 engages a roller 31 on a bar 29 slidable thereby in transverse guides 28 on the base 13. In operation, as the table and base are traversed in the direction of the arrow on the Figure to move the work past the stationary milling or grinding cutter 12, the lever 22 moves the shoe 19 in the same direction as the table but at a faster rate, whereupon an inclined portion of the cam 32 moves the bar 29 to cause rack teeth thereon to rotate a gear 30 on the work chuck 14. The work is thus rotated during its traverse to produce a corresponding inclined surface 138 on the work and the opposite edge of the land on the work is cut in a similar way by using a differently shaped cam 32.
