599,480. Shaping. BECHLER, A. Sept. 18, 1945, No. 24110. Convention date, Feb. 20. [Class 83 (iii)] A machine for shaping cam profiles comprises a planing-tool reciprocating at right angles to the direction of movement of a work holder carrier on which is mounted a cross-slide with control means carried thereon which co-operate with abutments to effect movement of the carrier upon displacement of the cross-slide. The work-carrier 20 is slidably mounted on a base 18 longitudinally adjustable on a bed 1 which supports a pillar 5 containing the drive to a vertically reciprocating tool carrier 8, the tool-holder 11 being adjustable around the axis of its securing bolt 12. The work 25 is mounted on an arbor 24 rotatable through worm gearing by a hand wheel 28. The longitudinal displacement of the work is effected by spring pressure between the carrier 20 and the tailstock portion 23 of the base 18 in which a roller 21 coacts with the straight face 39 of a calibrated plate 35 angularly adjustable and transversely slidable on the work-carrier. By operating the hand wheels 28 and 32, the cam profiling is manually controlled. In the profiling of cams of true spiral form, the hand wheel 32 is geared to the hand wheel 28, in which case the relative slide movements are mechanically controlled. For machining bellhousing cams, the arbor is constructed as a right-angled bevel drive, whilst for dealing with cams having lobes the tool-holder 11 is rotatably positioned.
