[Class 83 (iii).] Combined turning and boring machines; steady rests ; boring-bar machines.-A double headstock lathe for high cutting speeds, has a bed which is stepped down at the front and rear to support a tool slide in which the cutting tool is held in an inverted position. A section through the bed with front and rear slides 2, 3, stepped down below the level of a centre slide 1 is shown in Fig. 3; the saddle 11 carried by the front and centre slides has transverse and longitudinal sliding elements 15, 22 respectively, and intermediate rotatable elements 18, 27, Fig. 8, which may be locked in fixed angular positions by screws and wedge-pieces 30, 31, wedges also being provided, as shown, between the main sliding surfaces for taking up wear. A loose headstock 32, supported as in Fig. 5 by an auxiliary bud piece 33, may be adjusted longitudinally by screw means 34, in which only the headstock moves, or by unclamping the T-bolts 35 and moving the auxiliary piece 33 by the screw 36; the chuck 39 and centre 40 are rotated together by a self-contained motor 46, and a boring-bar 42 is arranged to rotate in a direction opposite to that of the work so that high cutting speeds may be obtained without detriment to the steady rest 43 which is used when boring. Cuttings, which leave the lathe in a downward direction as a result of the inverted position of the tool and clockwise rotation of the spindle, are directed to the back of the lathe by cover-plates 37.
