Turning. - In a grinding or turning lathe of the type in which the work, such as the outside crank-pin x of a locomotive driving-wheel, is held stationary and trued by a tool mounted on a rotary head h, a grinding spindle t, arranged at an angle to the crank-pin axis, is mounted in a snout s integral with a slide g and is driven from a central shaft 3. The head is rotated by a pinion i and the slide g is fed, radially by a screw j driven by bevel gearing q, n from a sleeve r. For performing turning operations, the grinding spindle together with its sleeve and driving pinion, is withdrawn and a hollow tool post 5 carrying a tool f is secured to a machined seating on the slide g, Fig. 3. For boring, a tool arm 8, Fig. 4, may be mounted on the seating.
