Abstract
391,980. Boring-bar machines. KELLENBERGER, L., (trading as KELLENBERGER & CO., L.), 28, Heiligkreuzstrasse, St. Galleno, Switzerland. May 18, 1932, No. 14104. Convention date, June 20,1931. [Class 83 (iii).] Cutter-bars.-In a boring-machine wherein a spindle carrying a concentric boring-head with a radially adjustable cutter is rotatable on its axis in a bearing detachably secured to a rest, adjusting means comprising a scale on the rest are provided which act on a rod passing concentrically through the spindle for radial adjustment of the cutter without lost motion. Either the rest or the work-table may be moved longitudinally relatively to the other. The spindle d is mounted in one or more bearings e, e<1> in a sleeve c which is removably attached to a slide a vertically adjustable on a pillar b. The spindle is driven by gearing f and the cutter i is radially adjustable by means of a wedge h moved axially by a concentric rod g the spindle and bearings being interchangeable with others of different size whilst using the same driving and adjusting means f, g. The boring head o may be interchangeably secured to the spindle d. A graduated hand-wheel r, Figs. 1 and 3, on the slide a, carries a bevel gear u engaging teeth on a ring v formed as a nut to cause axial displacement of a screwed segment w carrying a central pin p engaging the rod g for adjustment thereof, the axial thrust being taken by a stationary ring l, and segment 2. In a modified construction, the pin p is connected to a co-axial screwed spindle carrying the graduated hand-wheel r. The wedge h acts on an inclined surface of a holder n which carries the cutter i and is slidable transversely in guides on the head o against the action of springs which maintain contact with the wedge. The cutter may be adjusted during operation of the machine to produce counterbores or conical bores, as shown in Fig. 9, and the wedge h may be replaced by a lever, as shown in this Figure. By using a curved wedge, bores with a curved surface may be produced. The boring head o may be secured to the spindle d by a bayonet slot, or other detachable connection.
