Abstract
748,091. Screw-cutting attachments. AKTIEBOLAGET SVENSKA PRECISIONSVERKTYG. June 30, 1953 [July 1, 1952], No. 18079/53. Class 83 (3). A reversible rotary, screw-thread cutting-tool holder comprises a driving member 16 fixed to a shaft 10, and a driven member 58 mounting a chuck 102 for the tool, and force-transmitting members therebetween which include a ball clutch 40 and coupling members 60, 62 for direct or forward drive, and ball members 78 and coupling members 84, 62 for reverse drive. The driven member during both forward and reverse drives is not subjected to any axial pressure from the driving member. The clutch comprises a number of balls 46 pressed by springs 30 to engage part-spherical recesses in a member 38, the spring force being adjustable by screwing a collar 22 relatively to member 16 The recesses are interconnected by shallow grooves 45. Members 60 consist of diametrically-opposite projections on the inner wall of member 38 to abut roller members 62 carried by the driven member or spindle 58. Members 84 consist of diametrically-opposite projections on the inner wall of a sleeve 70 having races 74, 76 thereon, the latter race being adjustable axially relatively to race 74. The balls 78 are carried by a rotationally-stationary part 80 and engage the races 74, 76 and races 82 in the wall of member 16, whereby forward rotation of the member 16 causes reverse rotation of sleeve 70. In cutting a thread, e.g. tapping a hole, the holder is moved down with the tool until said tool abuts the bottom of the hole. The clutch then audibly slips, the balls 46 running in the groove 45, and the operator raises shaft 10 and member 16, to cause disengagement of members 60, 62 and engagement of members 84, 62. The tap is thus drawn out of the hole and once out, a spring 100 restores the parts for forward drive. The collar 22 and member 16 may have an indicating mark and scale for varying the spring pressure. The part 80 is held from rotation by an arm 81.
