Abstract

664,472. Grinding. NILES-BEMENT-POND CO. Sept. 15, 1949 [Sept. 15, 1948], No. 23834/49. Class 60 A machine of the planetary type for grinding internal cylindrical or conical surfaces comprises a work support 35, Fig. 2, movable on a base 10, a carriage 14 adjustable vertically on a column 12, a sleeve 16 rotatable within the carriage, an axiallymovable and rotatable spindle 26 mounted within the sleeve and provided at its lower end with a member 28a, and a radiallyadjustable support which is mounted within the member 28a and carries a grinding wheel 52 and the driving motor 50 therefor. The spindle 26, Fig. 5, is movable axially within, and splined to, a sleeve 20 which is mounted in the sleeve 16 so as to be angularly adjustable about horizontal pivots 22 at its lower end; adjustment is effected by a screw 27, and clamping screws 32 are provided. The motor 50, which preferably has the wheel 52 mounted on its extended armature shaft, is carried by a support 56, Fig. 6, movable radially on bearings 54 on the lower face of a base plate 28 in the member 28a by a nut which engages a screwthreaded shaft 58 and is actuated through gearing 62 from a jointed shaft 63 extending upwardly through the spindle 26 to a vertically-movable head 17, Fig. 4, which mounts the latter. During rotation of the sleeve 16 by a motor 114, Fig. 11, the member 28a may be moved radially by the coaction with concentrically-mounted gears 64, 46 on the upper ends of the shaft 63 and a sleeve 133 rotatable with the sleeve 16 of pinions 66, 84 associated with the gearing 72, 74, 78, 80 of a planetary gear unit 70. Rotation of the unit 70 which results in the wheel unit being fed radially, is effected through gearing 86, 88 from a shaft 85 driven from a hand-wheel at either high or low speed as determined by the setting of a clutch 87. The motor 114 rotates the sleeve 16 through changespeed gearing 112, shafting, gearing 90 ... 108, and clutches 96. The head 17, spindle 26, member 28, and grinding unit are moved vertically either from a hand-wheel acting through a vertical splined shaft and gearing to rotate a nut 124, Fig. 4, which is mounted against axial movement in the head 17 and engages a screw-threaded shaft 122 in the carriage 14. Power movement of the head 17 and associated parts is effected by rotating the shaft 122 from a reversible motor. The motor 50 is supplied with current by leads 131, Fig. 4, slip rings 132 on a sleeve 133, and further leads extending down the spindle 26 to the motor. In operation, the sleeve 16 is rotated and the grinding wheel 52, while driven by its motor 50, is fed axially and has its radial movement controlled by the unit 70; when boring conical holes, the spindle 26 is tilted about its pivots 22, and to permit this operation the spindle may be fitted with universal joints. The carriage 14 is adjustable vertically in guides in the column 12 by a motor acting through a rack and pinion. Adjustable limit switches are provided for determining the limits of movement of the member 28a. The work support 35 is movable transversely by a hand-wheel 39 on a saddle 29 movable longitudinally on the base 10 by a hand-wheel 37. U.S.A. Specification 1,323,267 is referred to.
