Abstract
446,149. Chucks. THOMPSON, G. H., 947, Bristol Road, Selly Oak, Birmingham. Aug. 21, 1935, No. 23432. [Class 83 (iii)] A combined clutch and chuck for power driven hand tools, such as grinding and polishing heads, comprises a non-rotary casing containing a split collet for gripping a polishing tool or an article to be polished, axial motion of the collet within the casing causing it to be engaged with or disengaged from a conical surface on a continuously rotating driving shaft so as to engage or stop the drive and simultaneously grip or release the tool &c. In one form, for gripping externally, the core 1, Fig. 1, of a flexible shaft is connected by a coupling 2 to a spindle 3 rotatable within a stationary casing 4. A thrust bearing 5 is located between a collar 6 on the spindle and a bush 7 screwing in the casing 4. A bevelled sleeve 9 is screwed to the outer end of the spindle and receives a split conical collet 10 which is normally urged outwardly by a spring 11, but may be forced inwardly by an outer sleeve 14 screwing on the casing and having an end flange 13 acting on the collet through a thrust bearing 12. To release the shank 15 of a tool such as a polishing head, the sleeve 14 is unscrewed from the casing 4, whereupon the spring 11 forces the collet 10 out of the sleeve 9 to release the shank and stop the drive. In a modified construction for gripping internally, the spindle 3, Fig. 2, is extended and provided with a cone 16 engaging an inner bevelled surface on a split collet 17 which is moved axially to grip the tool or work 25 by screwing the outer sleeve 18 on the casing 4, the thrust bearing 20 being located between the flange 18 of the sleeve and a washer 21 secured to the collet by a nut 22. A spring 23 releases the collet.
