Abstract

426,782. Chucks. HARMAN, M., 4, Pelikengasse, Vienna. Dec. 5, 1934, No. 34991. [Class 83 (iii)] In a self-centring chuck, the jaws are operated by transverse screws 1 .. 3 geared together by bevel gears 4 .. 6 and rotatable by a wrench &c., applied to the squared end of one screw. The absence of a central wheel &c., allows work to pass through the chuck. In one form, the nuts 8 on the screws are connected directly to jaws 10, Fig. 1, which are slidable along guides 16. The gripping surfaces of the jaws are inclined to the axes of the respective screws, as shown, so as to have a wedging effect when gripping the work, and the jaws are secured to the nuts by screws 9 in order that they may be rotated about the screws for gripping exterior or interior work. Screws 14 normally lying within the jaws may be caused to project axially therefrom so as to grip the work when the jaws have been rotated through 180‹ from the positions shown, the end of the work then resting on the faces of the jaws. In another form, the jaws are slidable in radial guides 17, Fig. 3, and are acted upon by inclined teeth 8<1> formed on the nuts 8. Each screw is formed integral with one of the bevel gears, the other gear being secured by a pin 7 which, during assembly of the chuck, is inserted after the jaws have been centred by gripping a work-piece. The nuts 8 may have the gripping surfaces formed directly on them.
