Abstract
709,060. Chucks. HERBERT, Ltd., A. Dec. 30, 1952, No. 32945/52. Class 83 (3) The jaws 31 of a hollow-spindle chuck are independently adjustable radially and axially in slots 30 in a sleeve 28 mounted within the spindle 13 and maintained in contact with a conical surface 14 on the spindle by being supported at their inner ends by the chamfered face of a ring 34 pressed in the disengaging direction by a spring 35 and at their outer ends by a flange member 24 adjustably screwed to a slidable actuating sleeve 22. The outer surfaces 38 of the jaws are preferably formed to a smaller radius (viewed endwise) than the conical surface 14, to ensure line contact and similarly the gripping surfaces 39 are formed to a radius equal to or greater than the maximum work diameter. A flanged bush 42 with jaw slots 44 prevents chips lodging between the jaws and has a chamfered inner end 45 for guiding the work into the jaws. The sleeve 22 may be shifted by mechanism as described in Specification 603,674, in which levers 18 are moved in the closing direction by an inclined face 50 on a yoke sleeve 16 slidable on the sleeve 22 or by ball mechanism, in which case the conical surface 14 is on a sleeve splined to the spindle and the flange 24 is fast with the spindle.
