Abstract

785,916. Chucks; lathe and like centres. CHURCHILL-REDMAN, Ltd. Nov. 18, 1953 [Nov. 18, 1952], No. 29066/52. Class 83 (3). A chuck comprises jaws 5, Figs. 1 and 2, pivoted in radial slots 3 in body 1 by pins 6 and urged by springs 21 out of gripping engagement with a work-piece. The jaws have gripping parts 7 mounted on blocks 27 adjustable radially in grooves 28, and are closed by axial movement of an operating-member 13. This member is carried by a rod 17 movable by hydraulic or pneumatic mechanism, there being a joint (not shown), which permits lateral movement of member 13 to allow the jaws to grip eccentric or asymmetric work. The work is centred by a spring-loaded centre 35 and abuts a plate 41. The jaws may be balanced about their pivots or be heavier on the rearward side so that centrifugal force has no effect, or urges the jaws to engage the work, respectively.
