Abstract

624,985. Chucks. KASIMIR, A. July 22, 1947, No. 19552. [Class 83 (iii)] A bevel-closing chuck comprises a body member 1 connected to a driving spindle 6, three or more passages in the body 1 converging towards the tool-gripping end, jaws 2 which are slidably mounted in the passages and screw-threaded on their outer surfaces for engagement by a nut 4 for moving the jaws to and from the gripping position, a sleeve 3 attached to the nut 4 so as to surround the body member 1, an annular flange 5 on the sleeve 3 extending inwardly over the end of the body member 1 opposite to the tool-gripping end, and an annular flange 7 on the spindle 6 extending over the sleeve flange 5 to locate the latter. The body member 1 has an annular recess formed therein to accommodate the nut 4 with clearance between the walls of the nut and those of the recess. The annular flange 5 of the sleeve 3 is located between the flange 7 and a bearing- ring 9 which is keyed to the end of the body member. A ball or roller bearing 8 is provided between the flanges 5, 7, and a ball-race 10 between the other side of the sleeve flange 5 and the bearing ring 9 ; in a modification, a bearing-ring may be interposed between the flanges 5, 7. Instead of the nut 4 being split in the above construction, as it must be to permit assembly, the body member is made small enough at the shaft end to enable the nut to be positioned over it.
