Abstract

678,885. Drivers and carriers. SMITH, R. N. May 7, 1951 [July 24, 1950], No. 18425/50. Class 83 (iii). A work-gripping and driving device, particularly for a veneer-peeling lathe, comprises an inner driver 2 having workengaging claws 3, 4 and being formed integrally with, or attached to, the headstock or tailstock spindle 1, an outer driver 9 mounted on the driver 2 and having claws 11, 12 surrounding the claws 3, 4, and means for clamping the driver 9 to the driver 2 in position to grip the work, the driver 9 being slidable axially to disengage itself from the work and substantially at right angles to the spindle 1 to disengage the chuck 2. The spindle 1 has a tapered part 17 with flats to engage a bore 16 in the driver 2, a centre 5 being formed on the end of the spindle or on the driver. A slot 10 in the driver 9 engages flats formed on a shank 6 of the driver 2 on which it is held by a nut 8 and preferably a washer 14 of horse-shoe form interposed between the nut and driver 9. The latter can be removed from the driver 2 when its claws, which may be carried by spokes supported on a hub, interfere with the turning operation. In a modification, a number of outer drivers 9 may be provided, mounted upon each other.
