216,917. Verschoyle, W. D. Feb. 6, 1923. Portable turning-apparatus.- A turning-lathe comprises a round bed-bar C angularly adjustable in brackets 13, 14 which may be clamped to a bench &c. The bed-bar is clamped in the adjusted position by screws 17, 18 and may be in two or more lengths clamped end to end within the brackets 14. The tailstock B and/or the tool-rest bracket 59, Fig. 3, may be feathered on the bed-bar or may be carried by split bushes angularly adjustable on the bed-bar. The headstock is integral with the bracket 13 and carries the spindle 20 driven through an internal gear wheel 25 by a hand crank 29 the latter being connected to the driving-wheel at a variable angular position by a claw-coupling 32. The tool-rest 67 is formed with a cylindrical rib 68 whereby it may be clamped at a given angle in the tool-rest bracket. Several tool-rest brackets may be provided. The tool-rests may be replaced by compound slides. The tailstock spindle is feathered in the tailstock and may carry a boring-tool 54 at one end, the other end being screwed to form an adapter for a centre or for a chuck 48. A hand collar 58 may be adjustably mounted on the tailstock spindle to serve as a stop to limit the penetration of the cutter during boring &c. The headstock spindle may be driven by an external gear wheel which may be mounted on an extension of the bar-bed. The tool rest and the jaws of the chuck 48 may be formed of the same section. Chucks.-The chuck 48, Fig. 5, comprises a series of keyhole-shaped jaws 50 radially adjustable by screws 52 mounted in a ring 51 which may be secured on the chuck body.
