Abstract

604,919. Grinding attachments for machine tools ; planetary grinders. BONEHAM & TURNER, Ltd., and BONEHAM, W. Feb. 2, 1945, No. 2622. [Class 60] A grinding attachment for use in a machine tool comprises a body part for attachment to the machine tool spindle and a grinding-wheel spindle rotatably mounted in the body part and driven by a fluid pressure turbine or motor supplied through fluid pressure inlet means, mounted on the body so that it does not normally rotate therewith, to which the fluid pressure supply for driving the spindle is connected. In one form for use in a jig boring machine for grinding holes previously bored by the machine, a grinding-wheel spindle D, Fig. 1, is mounted, by ball bearings E, E, eccentrically in a casing C mounted eccentrically in a body part A having a spigot B for securing in the machine tool spindle; the casing C is clamped in adjusted position in the body A by a screw L and segment L<SP>1</SP>; worm gearing for effecting the adjustment may be provided. The spindle D carries a turbine F to which air is supplied through a pipe K<SP>2</SP> and slip ring K mounted in a groove K<SP>3</SP> in the body part, packings K' being provided. The air passes to exhaust through passages C<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>2</SP>, C<SP>3</SP>, or a second slip ring may be provided. In a modification, the grinding-wheel spindle is always coaxial with the spigot which is held in a precision boring chuck of known type comprising a set of gripping jaws so mounted that they can be off-set relatively to the axis of the machine spindle by an adjustable amount. In a further modification, the grinding-wheel spindle is driven by an air motor of the sliding vane type.
