Abstract

1,253,808. Drilling &c. apparatus. S. THOMPSON. 14 March, 1969 [16 Dec., 1967], No. 57239/67. Headings B3C and B3N. Drilling &c. apparatus for mounting in a lathe opposite a lathe chuck or faceplate, comprises a support 5 having a part 5a for mounting from a lathe tool holder (such as a turret, capstan or tailstock), a member 4 or 14 rotatable in the support and mounting one or more spindles 9 or 10 for receiving a drill, the spindle including a planetary gear 11 meshing with a fixed gear 12 of the support so that rotation of the member 4 or 14 relative to the support 5 causes rotation of the spindle 9 or 10 as it rotates bodily with the member 4 or 14 for eccentrically drilling a workpiece held by the lathe chuck or faceplate, and means, such as a peg 18 for connecting the member 4 or 14 to the lathe chuck or faceplate or a workpiece held thereby for rotation of the member 4 or 14 therewith. The spindles 9 can serve directly to receive drill bits, but preferably, as shown, these spindles act as drive spindles for bit-receiving spindles 10 mounted in a forward part 14 which is detachably secured to the member 4 by way of a tube 15. Drive shafts 17 may be flexible or universally jointed to permit redistribution thereof to adapt them to different radial arrange - ments of spindles 10 on different members 14. Where all the shafts 17 either diverge from or converge to the axis 20 of rotation of member 4, the hollow part 15 may have an appropriately conical shape. The member 14 may have a central opening for accommodating an axiallyprojecting part of a workpiece. The spindles 9 or 10 can receive screw taps; the apparatus can perform operations similar to drilling.
