Abstract

968,362. Drilling. JOHN HAWTHORN & CO. Ltd. April 29, 1963 [May 10, 1962], No. 17948/62. Headings B3B and B3C. A multiple drill-head comprises a body 10 rotatable about a shaft 16 which is to be held against rotation in the tool-holder or turret of a lathe &c., tool-holders 39 rotatable relative to the body 10 when this rotates on the shaft 16, and means 45 on the body for engaging rotating work (not shown) or a workholder so that rotation of the drill-holders 39 is derived from rotation of the work. A collar 17, about which the shaft 16 has limited angular adjustment by means of a handle 25, mounts the drillhead in the lathe. A sunwheel 26 on the shaft engages planet wheels 27 on intermediate spindles 28 which have gears 34 for driving the drill-holders 39. These are preferably mounted in brackets 37 pivoting on the spindles 28, so that the radius of the drill 40 from the centre of the drill-head may be varied. The drill-spindles 36 pass through arcuate slots 38 in the end-plate 11 of the drill-head and further slots in a plate 41 which effects adjustment of the spindles and is locked by a bolt 49. Rotation of the drill-head may be effected by a faceplate 45 having a friction face 46 made to engage the rotating work. The plate 45 is supported from the plate 41 by a spring-pressed telescopic spigot 42, 43 which telescopes as the drills are fed through arcuate slots 47 in the faceplate. In addition to the face-plate, a driving arm may be provided on the drill-head for engaging a chuck-jaw or a projection on the work.
