Abstract

645,533. Gear-cutting. BIRRELL, D. M. Dec. 17, 1948, No. 32658. [Class 83 (iii)] An attachment for a milling-machine for cutting worm-wheel teeth comprises a sleeve 10 which is rotated by the machine spindle and carries a concentric cam 14 and a tool-holder 20, and means 36 secured to a fixed part of the machine to reciprocate the sleeve and tool 26 endwise of the spindle. The sleeve 10 is secured to a shaft 7 which is splined to engage an adaptor 5 and is supported by an outboard bearing 3. The blank 29 is gradually fed to depth and then indexed by one tooth space. The cam 14 is rotated by 180 degrees to reverse the hand of the worm-wheel teeth. For smaller wheels the holder 20 is omitted. The splines may be formed on the sleeve 10 instead of the shaft 7.
