Abstract

1,200,142. Tuning polygonal profiles; milling attachment. W. BEER. 19 June, 1968, No. 29260/68. Headings B3K and B3T. Apparatus facilitating the production of workpieces having polygonal cross-sectional profiles in a lathe comprises drive gearing 5, 6 connected to the lathe spindle and which is coupled to a tool holding assembly 2 by way of a splined cardan shaft 22-24. The splined shaft 22 transmits the drive to a gear member 14 in the assembly and which in turn drives gears 16 and 17 on the tool-holding spindles 12, 13, which rotate about axes parallel to the shaft 22. Tapered sockets 21 in the spindles 12 and 13 permit the engagement of rotary cutting tools 26 of the type having replaceable cutting inserts located around the periphery thereof. The tool holding assembly is mountable in the cross slide of the lathe and is movable, with the slide transversely and longitudinally of the workpiece. The speeds of rotation of the work spindle and a selected tool spindle are so determined in relation to the number of cutters on the rotary tool whereby a predetermined number of flats are machined on the rotating workpiece as the tool-holding assembly is traversed therealong. The tool-holding assembly may be pivoted about vertical and horizontal axes on the bracket 33 by which it is secured to the machine. The splined cardan shaft may be provided with a clutch 25 to permit the disengagement of the drive to the tool-holder assembly. Tapered and parallelsided polygonal configurations may be produced with the apparatus described. It is stated that the apparatus may also be used for producing screw threads.
