Abstract
590,448. Chucks. ALEXANDER MACHINERY, Ltd., G. H., and TOBUTT, H. B. April 20, 1945, No. 10007. [Class 83 (iii)] In a collet chuck, a split bush i has oppositely inclined surfaces co-operating with similar surfaces f, g on the body part a and on a slidable pressure ring e which is actuated by a hand lever or yoke p through a slidable coned sleeve n and bell-crank levers k. The surface is preferably formed by a hard metal inset h in the body part and the pressure ring is made in two parts e<1>, c<2> screwed together at l so that close adjustment of the interacting surfaces f, g, j can be effected. The pressure ring slides in an annular recess d in the body part and has a peripheral groove m engaged by the bell-crank levers k, preferably three in number, pivoted on the body. The lever p is pivotally supported on opposed shoes (not shown) in a groove r in the sleeve n and has an adjustable abutment s engaging another adjustable abutment t on a fixed part of the machine. A recessed portion u, or alternatively a plain cylindrical portion, on the sleeve n locks the levers k when the work is gripped. A coupling b connects the chuck to the lathe or other spindle c.
