Abstract
549,283. Chucks. LUCAS, S. Jan. 8, 1942, No. 295. [Class 83 (iii)] Articles are held concentrically by a double split socket, the splits in the outer and inner sockets being spaced 180 degrees apart. The outer socket d is held by screws f and dowels e to a back plate c itself secured by screws (not shown) to a face plate b screwed in the spindle nose a. Concentricity of the parts is secured by spigots and counterbores as shown. A screw l tapped into the socket d engages a recess cut in the split of the inner socket k to maintain it in place axially and prevent rotational slip. Grip is obtained from a bolt and nut i passing with clearance through jaws d<SP>3</SP> formed on the socket d and also through an eye bolt g<SP>1</SP> screwed into the back plate. Springs j assist the socket to expand when the nut is slackened. An end stop for the article held is formed by the rounded end of screw m screwed into a disc n and locked at o. The disc is maintained in position in a counterbore in the back plate by the inner socket k.
