Abstract

623,541. Mandrels. ARNOLD, J. C. (Benjamin, M. L.). May 2, 1945, No. 11139. [Class 83 (iii)] An expanding mandrel for holding a hollow tool or work-piece has a shank 1 with two parallel conical surfaces 6, 7 facing in the same direction and co-operating with similar surfaces inside a sleeve 8 which has alternate slots 9 extending from opposite ends thereof. Axial pressure for expanding the sleeve is applied thereto by means of a nut 5 screwing on the shank and acting on a flat-faced ring 14 which presses on a ring 13 having a spherical surface engaging a similar surface 12 on the end of the sleeve. The friction between the rings 13, 14 is stated to prevent torsion being applied to the sleeve when tightening the nut 5.
