Abstract

548,690. Chucks &c. BRITISH TIMKEN, Ltd., and ELLIS, L. M. Oct. 4, 1941, No. 12848. [Class 83 (iii)] An internal-expanding chuck or mandrel for supporting a work-piece 7 comprises a circumferentially continuous sleeve or shell 1 enclosing expanding means to cause it to grip the work which is of slightly greater internal diameter than the external sleeve diameter. In Fig. 1 the sleeve 1 is integral with a flange 2 and spigot 3 and is closed by a screwed plug 4. The expanding means comprises a pair of conical discs 10 having radial slits 11 and spaced by a ring 15 on the hub 9 of a flanged member sliding on a central draw bolt 8 operated by pneumatic, hydraulic or other means to flatten the discs. When the clamping pressure is released a spring 17 assists in restoring the discs and releasing the work. The discs may be made up of separate segments and there number may be varied. The conical discs may be replaced by toggle links. In a modification, Fig. 3, flange la on the sleeve is secured against a driving plate 5 by a screwed disc-retaining member 19. The plate 5 may be secured in a three-jaw chuck or to a face plate. In a further modification, Fig. 4, the sleeve has a conical bore 21 and is expanded by balls or rollers 26 arranged between flanges along the conical surface 23 of an expanding member carried by the draw bolt 8. In some cases the conical part 22 may engage directly with the conical surface of the sleeve. In another modification, Fig. 5, the sleeve 1 constitutes a closed hydraulic cylinder sealed by a plug 30 and washer 32 and filled with oil or other liquid. The sleeve is expanded by means of a ram 8. The oil may be replaced by a plastic or semiplastic material such as rubber.
