Abstract

912,646. Mandrels. SCULLYJONES & CO. Aug. 18, 1960, No. 28693/60. Class 83 (3). An expanding mandrel comprises a tapered shell 14 which can be expanded on a tapered body 11 by fluid pressure, the shell being able to move on the body to relieve the internal pressure if the pressure should become excessive. The shell may be of beryllium-copper and is retained by a ring 40. The fluidpressure is produced in a chamber 36 by set-screws 25, 38 acting on nylon balls 26, 37 engaging seals 27, 34, each containing a steel ball to press the periphery of the seal against the bore of the chamber. The fluid may be uncured synthetic rubber. In a modification, the shell 16b, Fig. 5, grips internally and the chamber 36b is offset. Besides being offset it may also be transverse. In a further modification, the body 11c, Fig. 6, is flanged and secured to a spindle, and the pressure is produced by the movement of a centre 46 into engagement with a plunger 45.
