Abstract

593,607. Mandrels. BUESCHER, A., and ARNOLD, C. June 8, 1945, No. 14579. [Class 83 (iii)] An expanding mandrel comprises a cylindrical work-holding body 10 radially slotted as at 15, 16 to allow expansion and a longitudinally adjustable rod 22 having a plurality of axiallyspaced tapered steps, as 25, 24, engaging correspondingly tapered seats 30, 29 in the bore of the body so that the gripping pressure on a work-piece 21 is spread relatively uniformly along its length. The rod 22 is threaded into the unslotted end of the body and extends therefrom to receive a tool for rotating it and also to carry lock-nuts 27, 28 that act as an adjustable stop limiting the extent to which the rod can be screwed in. The other end of the body is also expanded by the engagement of the conical point of the centre 32 with a conical seat 31.
