Abstract

840,647. Grinding ; trueing grinding wheels. GESELLSCHAFT DER L. VON ROLL'S CHEN EISENWERKE A. G. Aug. 1, 1958 [Aug. 2, 1957], No. 24921/58. Class 60. A machine for grinding the slideways of machine tools comprises a slide 4, Fig. 2, vertically movable on a cross-slide 2 supported for horizontal movement on a cross-arm 1, 32 of the machine, and two grinding discs 8 carried on a shaft 77 driven by and mounted with a motor 12 on a support 6 which is pivotally mounted to the slide 4 and to a yoke 11 carried by the slide. The shaft 77 is belt-driven from the motor 12, the axes of the shaft and motor being on opposite sides of lugs 7, 10 which engage bores in the slide 4 and yoke 11, respectively. The support can be rotated through 360 degrees to present the discs at the correct angle to the slideways of the workpiece by gearing 14, 15 driven by a hand lever 16 or a motor ; slip rings 17 connect the electric-supply to the motor. The slide 4 is vertically adjustable on guideways 5, Fig. 4, on the cross-slide 2 by a hand or motor driven screw 18 and can be clamped in position to dampen vibrations from the motor 12 and the grinding operation by the heads 62 of bolts 63 spring or hydraulically urged into contact with the guides of the slide. On release of the clamping pressure, the guides bear only on rollers 27 which are sprung into contact with the guides for ease of adjustment of the slide. Similar bolts 20 engage the gear 14 to releasably clamp the support to the slide. The cross-slide is resiliently suspended by a piston-andcylinder device 33, 34, the piston of which is secured to a frame 37 having rollers 38 engaging a beam 32 forming part of the crossarm of the machine. The cross-slide is traversed along the cross-arm by a motor 19 driving a gear over a horizontal spindle and is pulled upward against a guide-way 3 by spring-urged guide rollers 40 engaging a guide-way 1. The surface of the grinding discs may be trued by diamonds 53, Figs. 6 and 7, carried on slides 51 independently vertically adjustable by screws 54 on a member 50 which is reciprocated by an adjustable hydraulically-operated piston- and-cylinder device 55. As the slides 51 are adjusted and the diameter of the discs decrease, wipers 56 attached to the slides move over a fixed resistant 57 in the circuit of the motor to vary its speed and keep the peripheral speed of the discs constant ; the speed of the motor is determined by the diameter of the largest disc. A profile corresponding to the V-shape of a slideway on the workpiece may be formed on at least one of the discs by a roller 44, Fig. 5, on an arm 46 which is movable about a pivot 47 by worm-gearing 49 and a screw 48; alternatively, a rectilinearly adjustable slide may be used as a carrier for the roller. The support 6 and slides 2, 4 may be adjusted so that the discs 8, 9 selectively grind the slideways of the workpiece, and a third wheel may be provided on an extension of the shaft 77 to grind an under surface on the workpiece.
