Abstract

1,027,213. Grinding. HAMMOND MACHINERY BUILDERS Inc. July 22, 1963 [Aug. 27, 1962], No. 28972/63. Heading B3D. An abrasive belt machine comprises a pedestal 2 extending upwardly from a base 1, and a substantially horizontally extending beam 4 which is mounted on the pedestal, means at one end of the beam supporting a pair of vertically spaced rollers 14, 19, one of which is driven, and at the other end a contact roller 64 mounted for pivoted movement about an axis A, Fig. 8 (not shown), passing substantially through the axis of rotation of the contact roller whereby the latter may be adjusted to obtain proper tracking of an abrasive belt extending around the rollers. The beam which is adjustable about a pivot 6 on the pedestal, is secured by a clamp 7, and carries a motor 11 for driving the lower roller 14. The upper roller 19 is rotatably supported by a sleeve 21, Fig. 4 (not shown), which is slidable on a post 17 and connected by a block 31 extending through a slot 22 in the post to a collar 28 disposed within the post. The collar has an unthreaded opening 29 through which extends a screw 23 engaging a threaded collar 24 non-rotatably located in the post 17, the screw being rotatably supported in a block 37. A handle 39 is secured to the rod which, when rotated thereby, axially moves the lower collar 24 to cause a spring 36 to act on the collar 28 to vertically adjust the upper pulley 19, the spring also causing the pulley to resiliently tension the abrasive belt. Alternatively, the collar 28 is threadedly engaged with the rod 23 which is rotatable by the handle 39 to adjust the vertical position of the roller and connected to a piston-and-cylinder device supplied with pneumatic pressure to tension the abrasive belt. The other end of the beam 4 removably carries a bracket 51, Figs. 2 and 8, having arms 56 carrying pins 60, 60a for pivotally mounting a bearing housing 58 for the shaft 61 of the contact wheel. The housing has a lug 71 rotatably carrying a screw 72 engaged in the bracket 51 whereby the shaft 61 can be rocked about the pins 60, 60a to adjust the tracking of the abrasive belt, the contact wheel comprising a pair of metal plates 66, 67 and layers of soft buffing material 68. The bracket 51 carrying the contact wheel 64 may be removed from the upper surface 53, Fig. 2, of the beam and replaced by a bracket 101, Fig. 10 (not shown), mounted on a side face of the beam having a plurality of pairs of holes 104 to permit the bracket to be fitted in various positions. A tubular member 109 is secured by a screw 113 engaging a slot in the bracket in an adjustable position on the bracket and has a bore receiving a pin 112 on a mounting 111, 117 for a contact wheel 123 and an adjustably mounted guide pulley 118. The contact wheel can be adjusted about the axis of the pin 112 which passes through the axis of rotation of the roller by slackening a screw 116 which threadedly engages the pin 112 and passes through a vertical slot in the tubular member 109, a shoulder on the screw engaging the member 109 upon tightening of the screw to retain the contact roller in its adjusted position. In another fitting for attachment to the end of the beam 4, the tubular member 109 on the bracket 101 receives a pin 112, Fig. 12 (not shown), on a block 131 having arms 132, 133 carrying a contact roller 141 of small diameter, e.g. 1 inch, and width. Spacers 137, 138 permit rollers of different width to be carried by the arms. A screw 116, as before, permits adjustment of the roller about the axis of the pin to control the tracking of the belt. Auxiliary blocks 151, Fig. 14 (not shown), may be fitted to the arms 132, 133 and carry a freelyrotatable pair of discs 158 spaced above a second pair of freely-rotatable discs 161. The peripheries of the discs receive a roller 163 around which, and the contact roller 141, the abrasive belt is guided to provide a flat portion 167 for operating on flat workpieces, the belt also running over an idler pulley 165. The contact roller 141 may be dispensed with so that the belt runs along the path B 1 about the roller 163 to present an abrasive surface of small radius. In a similar fitting, a flat abrading surface 171, Fig. 16 (not shown), is provided by the belt running over a contact roller 123 on a fitting 111, as shown in Fig. 10 (not shown) secured to the beam 4, and a roller 183 mounted on an arm 178 connected to a base 174 secured to the undersurface of the beam, a link 191 permitting pivotal adjustment of the arm and hence the angle at which the flat portion 171 of the belt is located. The roller 183 can be rocked about an axis passing through its axis of rotation to control the tracking of the belt. In a further fitting for fixing to the beam so that the surface at the bottom of a slot may be abraded, the tubular member 109, Fig. 10 (not shown), on the bracket 101 receives a pin 203, Fig. 20 (not shown), on an arm 211 carrying a pair of pulleys 206, 216 around which a V-belt is entrained, the abrasive belt being backed by the V-belt in the pulley 216.
