Class 60 A grinding and polishing machine has an endless abrasive belt 40 extending around three rollers 10, 22, 23. The contact roller 10 has a relatively soft cushioned outside surface which may be formed from cloth, rubber, felt, sheepskin, hair, wire &c. The roller 10 rotates about a shaft 12 received in U-shaped recesses 13 in the ends of spaced arms 43, 44 on a part 14 pivotally mounted by vertical bolt 45 on a part 16 to permit tracking of the belt 40; adjustment is effected by a screw 48 engaging a nut 50 rotatable by knobs 51, and. damping in the adjusted position is effected by a bolt 47 in slot 46. The part 16 is pivotally mounted on a, stand 17 by a horizontal bolt 18, clamping in the adjusted position being effected by a bolt 19. The roller 23 is.mounted on and driven by a motor 24 held on a base plate 25 supported from the ends of rods 20, 21 extending through holes in the part 16. The roller 22 is mounted on a shaft 31 carried by member 30 slidable along the rods 20, 21 by a screw 32. The screw 32, operated by handwheel 33, is rotatably supported at one end by a cross member 34 and at the other end by a hole in the part 16; it engages internal threads of a bushing 36 threaded into a slide 37 mounted on the rods 20, 21, rotation of the bushing being prevented by a set screw 38. The screw 32 passes freely through a hole in member 30; a spring 39 is located between the bushing 36 and member 30 so as to tension the belt. The arc of contact between the belt 40 and the contact roller 10 is altered by adjusting the rods 20, 21 vertically relative to part 10, clamping in the adjusted position being effected by wing bolts 41, 42 in tapped holes in the part 16. The unit comprising the part 14, 16 and the parts carried thereon may be removed from the stand 17 and mounted on a lathe, rolling machine &c. The bolts 18, 19 may be used for so mounting it, or bolts or pins extending through holes 54 in the part 16 may be used. Alternatively, the unit may be suspended from a yoke 56 secured thereto by the bolt 18, the yoke 56 being supported by hook 57 of a chain twist 55; to maintain the parts 14, 16 horizontal a strap 58 is connected between the yoke and the parts 14, 16.
