Abstract

680,106. Belt abrasive machines. MORRIS, Ltd., B. O. Feb. 3, 1950 [Feb. 3, 1949], No. 2941/49. Class 60. A grinding or polishing machine of the backstand type employing an endless belt 30 comprises a supporting stand carrying upper and lower rollers 3, 12 mounted for rotation about horizontal and parallel, or approximately parallel, axes which are spaced vertically apart and so positioned that the vertical spacing is relatively great compared with any horizontal spacing, the mounting of one of the rollers being adjustable to permit its rotational axis to be tilted into and out of exact parallelism with that of the other roller to obtain correct tracking of the belt. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the back-stand is in the form of a column 11 on a pedestal 13, the roller 3 being carried from a clamp 19 adjustable along the column. The roller 3 is carried on a bracket 20 which is pivoted to the clamp 13 on a vertical axis lying in a plane parallel to, and midway between, the end faces of the rollers 3, 12. Adjustment of the bracket 20 is effected by a rod 24 rotatably mounted in a lug 27 on the clamp and in screw-threaded engagement with a member 25 journalled in the bracket 20; a collar 28 on the rod 24 limits axial movement of the rod 24 in one direction, and a compression spring 29 is disposed between the lug 27 and member 25. At least one of the two rollers, and preferably the roller 12, is movable so as to adjust the tension of the belt. As shown, the roller 12 is supported on a lever 32 which is pivoted to the pedestal and connected to a bar 33; this bar is provided with a series of notches 35 for engaging a peg 36 on the column, and a guard rail 37 limits upward movement of the bar when released from the peg. Each of the rollers 3, 12 may be mounted so as to be adjustable axially, Fig. 3 (not shown). In use, the belt 30 passes over a driving roller 15 mounted on one of the spindles of a twin-spindle grinding machine 17. The Provisional Specification describes also the pivotal mounting of the lower roller as being spring-loaded to provide adjustable belt-tensioning means. Specification 680,107 is referred to.
