[Class 60] A grinding-machine of the endless-band type comprises a base or pedestal a having mounted upon it a fixed boss b forming a journal for a horizontal driven shaft c carrying at one end a contact wheel d, the fixed boss b having extending substantially radially from it a column e having a screwthreaded extremity e<SP>1</SP> on which is mounted a nut member f having pivoted to it about an axis h at right angles to and offset from that of the column e, a bracket g carrying a stud i extending parallel to the axis h about which the bracket g is pivoted and having fast upon it an idler pulley about which and the driven pulley or contact wheel d there extends an abrasive band k, a compression spring m located between the bracket g and a projection f<SP>1 </SP>on the nut member f acting to swing the bracket g in a direction to apply tension to the abrasive band k. The base or pedestal a is preferably hollow ; the drive pulley d is preferably covered with suitable yielding material; the shaft c may be driven directly by a motor on the pedestal a, but is preferablydriven by suitable connections from a motor housed in the pedestal, e.g. mounted on a hinged platform in the pedestal. Provision may be made for enabling the speed of the drive to be varied. A handle n is provided on the bracket g to enable it to be moved pivotally against the action of the spring m for the purpose of removing or replacing the abrasive band, as for instance when the interior surfaces of rings and like members are being grooved. The nut member f is preferably split, and a screw-acting locking handle p provided to enable it to be locked in position after adjustment. The boss b is provided with two openings b<SP>1</SP>, b<SP>2</SP> at right angles to one another to receive the column e in vertical or horizontal position respectively. A work support r, which may be angularly adjustable, is carried by a bracket r<SP>2</SP> adjustably clamped on the column; the work support has an open-ended slot r<SP>1</SP>. A back support or platen s, Fig. 2, may be provided, adapted to be positioned behind a portion of the abrasive band to enable a work piece to be pressed against the band; the platen may be faced with yielding material s<SP>1</SP> to enable contoured articles to be ground. The platen may be mounted on the column by means of an extension or bracket having elongated slots.
