Description

G. GARLSENf SAW SHARPENING MACHINE.
Patented May '7, 1889.
Application filed July 18, 1888. Serial No. 280,296.
' UNITED STATES PAT NT OFFICE.
GUSTAV GARLSEN, OF ULEABORG, FINLAND, ASSIGN OR TO HOLST dz FLEISOHER, OF OHRISTIANIA, NORINAY.
SAW-SHARPENING MACHINE,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,560, dated May 7, 1889.
1888, NO- 310, in Sweden September 28, No. 9,036.
(No model.) Patented in Finland September 23, 1887,11'0. 1,209; in Norway May 28, 1888,11'0-969,
1887, no. 297, and was, and in England June 20, 1888,
To 01. whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GUSTAV OARLSEN, a subject of the King of Norway, residing at Uleaborg, Finland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grinding- Machines for Frame Saws, (for which I have obtained Letters dated June 20,1888, No. 9,036; in Norway, dated May 28, 1888, No. 969; in Sweden, dated September 28, 1887, No. 1,209, and in Finland, dated September 23, 1887, N o. 297, and J une 8, 1888, No. 310;) and I. do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention relates to saw-sharpening machinery, and has for its object to provide a machine by means of which saws may be sharpened without removing the same from their frames in an expeditious and thorough manner.
The invention consists instructural features and combinations of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully described, and as set forth in the claims.
In the drawing, whichillustrates my invention by an isometric View, A indicates a stand comprising a foot, a, adapted to be bolted to the floor, and a head, a, connected with the foot or, by the rods a In the head and, foot are formedbearings for a screw-shaft, B, that carries at its upper end a crank, b, and a flywheel, b. The frame 0, that carries the sharpening-tool, comprises two heads, 0 and c, con- .nected by tie-rods 0 c and an intermediate cross-head, 0, through which the tie-rods c of the frame 0 and the tie-rods a of the stand A pass. The latter rods, a pass loosely through the cross-head O, which is also provided with a screw-threaded opening, e in which works the screw-shaft B, by means of which the sawfra1ne is adjusted vertically. On the head c'of frame 0 is formed or secured a stud, cl, for. a driving-pulley, D, by means of which the sharpening-tool is rotated,
Patent in England,
as will hereinafter appear. From the front face of the head 0' of frame 0 project lugs or ears, between which is pivoted to swing horizontally an arm, E, to the outer end of which is hinged the tool carrier or stock F. The lug f that serves to hinge the stock F to the arm E, has a pin, f that passes through said stock and forms a pivot therefor, thus enabling the stock to swing on a vertical and horizontal pivot.
The sharpening tool used is an emerywheel, G,.of proper form, mounted on an arbor, g, in the lower end of the stock F, which is forked for the purpose, and 011 said arbor g is also mounted apulley, g (Shown in dotted lines.) At the upper or inner end of the forked portion of the stock F is secured an arbor, f, that carries a pulley, f, belted to pulley g, and a pulley, F, belted to the driving-pulley D. To the arm E is secured an angle-arm or tool-rest, e, that projects under the tool-stock, to support the same and prevent its turning on its pivot when moved from saw-tooth to saw-tooth. The tool-rest e is preferably made more or less flexible or elastic, so as to form a yielding rest for the tool-stock F.
A number of saws may be arranged side by side and sharpened one after the other by swinging the tool-stock F from one saw to another, or by adjusting the arm E and the tool-stock, the saws being held in proper position in any suitable manner, the vertical adjustment of the tool-stock being effected through the medium of the screw-shaft B and its crank-wheel h.
x It is obvious that by means of the described construction of machine saws may be readily sharpened without moving them from their frames, while the machine itself is simple and light in construction and requires but little power.
Having described my invention, what I claim is* 1. In a saw sharpenin g machine, the combination, with the frame 0 and its cross-head O, of the stand A and its screw-shaft B, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. In a saw-sharpeningmachine, the combination, with a 'ertically-adjustable frame, 0, a tool-stock, and a revoluble tool mounted in one end of said stock, of a connecting-arm hinged to the tool-stock and frame 0, and a tool-rest, c, secured to said connecting-arm and projecting under the tool-stock to support the same, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. Ina saw-sharpening machine, the combination, with a vertically-adjustable frame, 0, a tool-stock, and a revoluble tool mounted in one end of said stock, of a connecting-arm hinged to the tool-stock and frame 0, and a flexible or elastic tool-rest, e, secured to said connecting arm and projecting under the tool-stock to support the same, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. The combination, with a stand, A, its screw-shaft B, the frame 0, having crosshead C and head a, and the arm E, hinged to said head 0', of a tool-stock and a universal joint between said stock and arm, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
5. The combination, with the stand A, its
screw-shaft B, the frame C, having cross.- head 0, and a driving-pulley mounted on said frame 0, of a tool-stock, a revoluble tool mounted thereon, an intermediate arm hinged to said frame and tool-stock, and transmitting pulleys connected with the driving-pulley and revoluble tool. substantially as and for the purposes specified.
6. The combination, with the stand A, its screw-shaft B, the frame 0-, having crosshead 0 and heads 0 c, the band-pulley, pulley D, mounted on head 0, and the arm E, hinged to head 0', of the slotted tool-stock F, the emery-wheel G, the band-pulley g, and the band and. transmitting pulleys F f, said parts being arranged and cooperating substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 4 presence of two witnesses.
GUSTAV CARLSEN.
