FIG].

UNITED STATES PACEENT OFFICE- THOMAS LIiMsnEN, or earnsnnhn, ENGLAND.
TOOL AND LIKE GRINDING MACHINE.
To' all whom it mawcem: I Be it known that'I, THOMAS Lo yrsnnn, a subject of the Kin of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Gateshead, in the county of Durham, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Tool andlLike Grinding Machines, of which the following is a specifica tlon. This invention relates to grinding machines of the type in which the grinding wheel or disk is moved relatively to the tool or cutter to be sharpened, and, the invention has for its object to provide a machine for 5 grinding or sharpening the tools or cutters of large machine tools such as lathes and slotting, shaping, planing and like'machines'. I will fully describe my invention with reference .to the accompanying drawings Wherein a Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a grinding machine embodying my improvements, and Fig. 2 is a section on the line X-Y therein. Referring to the drawings a is a driving shaft mounted in a bed-plate b and having a driving pulley a and a loose pulley d. On-
the driving shaft a is mounted an oscillating frame or column e, and in bearings at the upper end of the frame or column e 1s gmounted a shaft f carrying an annular or cup-shaped grinding wheel or disk-g. The
frame or column e is oscillated by a connecting rod in pivoted to the frame or column 6 b at 7' and a crank pin in on a disk m which is driven by and from the driving shaft a. The.
disk m is driven from the driving shaft (1 by a pulley n thereon, a belt 0, a pulley p, variable speed mechanism contained in a 0 gear box or casing q, and a pinion r gearing with the toothed periphery of the crank disk m. The variable speed mechanism comprises toothed wheels s, s and 's rotating with and free to slide 'onz-the shaft t of the pulley p and corresponding toothed Wheels u, u and u on the shaft 4; of the pinion r. By meshing the wheels 3,3. and s in the known manner with the wheels u, u and a respe tively the speed ofthe shaftkv and 0 hence the speed of the oscillations of the frame or column e cahbe "varied without variation of the speed of the driving shaft a. The crank pin ['3 1s adjustable as to throw or eccentricity in any suitable manner for the I purpose of vvarying the angle through which the frame or column 6 oscillates. Conven Specification of Letters Patent. t t July Applicatlon-fild February 8, 1911; Serial No. 607,365.
iently the crank pin'la projects through a slot -Wl1lCl1 is mounted within the crank disk at and provided with a bevel wheel y gearing with a complementary wheel 2 on a spindle 2-disposed within the hollow shaft of the, disk m and furnished with a handwheel 3 so screwed spindle a: can berotated to adjust the crank pin 70 toward oraway from the center of the disk The crank pin is can be adjusted by operating the handwheel 3 nw hile the frame or column a is bein oscilcompoundslide -11 carried'by a turret 12 mounted on the bed-plate b whereby the tool or cutter can be adjusted as required to pothe grinding wheel or disk.
On the rotation of the driving shaft a the grinding wheel ordisk is driven thereby and the disk on is simul aneously driven by the shaft a, and by means of the crank pin is and connecting rod h the frame or column e is oscillated on the driving shaft a and carries the annular face or rim 13 of the grinding wheel or disk 9 across the tool or cutter fixed in the holder 7, and a true facelor surface is ground on the tool or cut.- ter. As both the grinding wheel shaft f of oscillation of the frame or column (3- 5. 2. the driving shaft w-the oscillations of the frame or column e do not affect the driving of the grinding wheel'g or the disk m.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a tool grinding or sharpening machine the combination with a driving shaft mounted in bearings in a bed-plate, of a frame or column trunnioned at'its lower end on said driving shaft, a grinding wheel or disk mounted at the upper or free end of said frame or column, an adjustable holder for holding the tool to be ground, means for rotating said grinding wheel or disk direct from said driving shaft, means for'oscillating said frame or column-during thdgrinding operation, andmeans for varying the 'is g a by a pulley 4 thereon, a belt 5 and a pulley 6 onsition against the annular face or rim 13 of and the disk at are driven from the center w and is mounted on a screwed spindle that by operating said handwheel the 7 '36s ground is fixed i rier 8 which is angularly ad usta ble by a pivot 9 on a turntable carriage 10 mounted on a angular; length or stroke of the oscillations of said frame orcolumn, saidmeans being capableof adjustment while said frame or col l'i'is beingoscillated, 2
2. Inatool-grindingorsharpeningmachine f the'eombination with a driving shaft mounted in bearings in a bed-plate,of a frame or column trunnioned at its lower end on said -drivin'g shaft, a grinding wheel or disk mounted at the upper or free end of said frame or column, an" adjustable holder for holding the toolto be ground, means for rotating-said rinding wheel or disk direct from said drlving shaft, means for oscillatmg d frame 'or column during thegrind- I Iteration,- and-means for varying the "the oscillations of said frame or with respect to 'the speed of said shaft. i
v grinding machines, 'the' combination frame or column mounted on atrunniomlmeans for oscillating said frame or frame or column, an annular or cup-shaped coluiiiii on saidtrunnion, means for varying the'js eed of-the oscillations of said frame oreo umn, means for varying the angular lengthjorstroke of the oscillations of said frime' 'or column,,a shaft mounted on said grinding wheel or disk carriedby said shaft,
means for rotating said shaft and grinding wheel or disk, and a tool holder mounted speed of the-oscillations of said frame or column, an adjustable crankpin for varying the angular len h or stroke of the oscillations of said rame or column, a shaft mounted on said frame or column, an annular or cup-shaped grinding wheel or disk carried: by said shaft, means for rotating said shaft saidrotating means being driven by and from said driving shaft, and a tool holder mounted on an adjustable carriage. In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing- THOMAS LUMSDEK. i
