Abstract

882,571. Sewing machines. AMERICAN THREAD CO. July 28, 1959 [Sept. 25, 1958], No. 25837/59. Class 112 [Also in Groups IX and XXXIV] A roller thread tensioning device for sewing and textile machines includes a roller having a peripheral friction surface around which the thread is passed frictional braking means for said roller and adjustable magnetic means for affecting the braking action of said braking means on said roller. A sewing machine 10 has a conventional tensioning arrangement 11 rendered ineffective by a spacer 15 separating the usual adjustably spring loaded discs 12. A roller thread tensioning device 17 has a bracket 18 secured to the machine 10 by a foot 19 and having arms 22, 23 having holes 24, 25 respectively for guiding the thread. A mounting stud 26, secured to the bracket 18 by nuts 29, 30, carries a support arm 31 which may be angularly adjusted by slackening nut 29. The nut 30 may be replaced by a shoulder. A ferrous roller 33 having a friction surface 35 of rubber or the like is rotatably mounted on the stud 26 and is free to slide axially. A non- magnetic disc 37, having friction pads 38 is screwed on stud 26 into proximity with roller 33 and with the nut 30 limits the axial movement of the roller. A barrel 39 is adjustably screwed on stud 26 and carries permanent magnets 42 which pull the roller 33 on to the friction pads 38. Individually adjustable arms 45, 46 pivotally mounted on the arm 31 permit separate adjustment of the pressures of rollers 47, 48 against the friction surface 35 of the roller 33. Thread slots 50, 50a are provided in lateral extensions 49, 49a respectively secured to the support arm 31. The thread is passed through the guide holes 24, 25 and the slot 50, around rollers 47, 33, 48 in succession and through the slot 50a and through the disabled tensioning arrangement 11 to the needle 55. Tension of the thread is effected by the frictional drag on the roller 33 which can be varied by adjusting the gap between the magnets 42 and the roller 33.
